Societ? Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly referred to as simply Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in Naples and founded in 1926 after a merge between Naples FBC and U.S. Internazionale Napoli.[2] The club has spent most of their history in the top tier in Italian football,[2] where they currently play for the 2008?09 season.

Napoli, who play in azure blue shirts with white shorts have won Serie A twice, first in 1986?87 and then again in 1989?90.[2] They have also won Coppa Italia in their home country three times. On the European stage, Napoli have won the UEFA Cup, a triumph which was achieved in 1988?89. Historically, Napoli are the ninth most successful club in Italian football[3] and the most successful in Southern Italy.[3]

The club have had several names changes since first appearing in 1926; the most important of these was 1964, when they changed the name from Associazione Calcio Napoli to Societ? Sportiva Calcio Napoli. The most recent change was in 2004,[4] when the club went bankrupt but were refounded by film-producer Aurelio De Laurentiis as Napoli Soccer; he restored the name back to Societ? Sportiva Calcio Napoli in early 2006.

Τhe Marantona era

Napoli broke the world transfer record fee, turning to Diego Maradona with a 12 million dollar deal from Barcelona on 30 June 1984.[21][22] The squad was gradually re-built, with the likes of Ciro Ferrara, Salvatore Bagni and Fernando De Napoli filling the ranks.[16] The rise up the tables was gradual, by 1985?86 they had a third place finish under their belts, but better was yet to come. The 1986?87 season was the landmark in Napoli's history; they won the double, securing the Serie A title by three points and then beating Atalanta 4?0 to lift the Coppa Italia.[2]

Because a mainland Southern Italian team had never won the league before, this turned Diego Maradona into a cultural, social and borderline religious icon[23] for Neapolitans, which stretched beyond the realms of just football.[23]

The club were unsuccessful in the European Cup in the following season and finished runners-up in Serie A. However, Napoli were entered into the UEFA Cup for 1988?89 and won their first major European title.[2] Juventus and Bayern Munich were defeated on the way to the final, where Napoli beat VfB Stuttgart 5?4 on aggregate, with two goals from Careca and one each from Maradona, Ferrara and Alem?o.[24]

Napoli added their second Serie A title in 1989?90, beating AC Milan by two points in the title race.[2] However, this was surrounded by less auspicious circumstances as Napoli were awarded two points for a game, when in Bergamo an Atalanta fan threw a 100 lira coin at Alem?o's head.[12] A controversial set of events set off at the 1990 World Cup, when Maradona made comments pertaining to North-South inequality in the country and the risorgimento, asking Neapolitans to root for Argentina in the semi-finals against Italy in Naples.[25]
? I don't like the fact that now everybody is asking Neapolitans to be Italian and to support their national team. Naples has always been marginalised by the rest of Italy. It is a city that suffers the most unfair racism. ?

?Diego Armando Maradona, July 1990

Napoli ultras responded by displaying a banner in their curva that read: "Maradona, Naples loves you, but Italy is our homeland".[26] It was the only stadium during the competition where the Argentine national anthem wasn't jeered,[26] Maradona bowed to the Napoli fans at the end and his country went on to reach the final. However, after the final the Italian Football Federation forced Maradona to take a doping test, which he failed testing positive for cocaine; Napoli and he claimed it was a revenge plot for events at the World Cup.[23] Maradona was banned for 15 months and would never play for the club again.[23] The club still managed to win the Supercoppa Italiana that year, with a record 5?1 victory against Juventus, but it would be their last major trophy. In the European Cup however, they went out in the second round.

uventus Football Club (BIT: JUVE) (from Latin[5] iuventus: youth, pronounced [ju?v?ntus]), commonly referred to as Juventus and familiarly as Juve, is an Italian professional football club based in Turin, Piedmont. The club was founded in 1897 and have spent their entire history, with the exception of the 2006?07 season, in the top flight First Division (since 1929, called Serie A).

Juventus is the most successful team in the history of Italian football[6] and one of the most recognized in the world. Overall, the club have won 51 official trophies, more than any other team in the country; 40 in Italy, which is also a record, and 11 in European and world competitions. The Old Lady is the third most successful club in Europe and the sixth in the world with the most international titles officially recognised by one of the six continental football confederations and FIFA.

The club was the first Italian and Southern European side to win the UEFA Cup. In 1985, Juventus, the only team in the world to have won all official international cups and championships became the first club in the history of European football to have won all three major UEFA club competitions.

In Italy, Juventus is the club which has the biggest fan base, having also one of the largest numbers of supporters in the world, with a total of 170 million Juventus's supporters (it. tifosi) worldwide. The club is a founding member of the European Club Association, which was formed after the dissolution of the G-14, a collection of Europe's most elite clubs. The Torinese side is also recognized for its contribution to the Italian national team.

At present, the bianconeri play their home games at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino. The stadium which the club owns, Stadio delle Alpi is undergoing long-term structural changes and will not be completed for use until 2011.

Recent times
Fabio Capello became manager of Juventus in 2004, and led Juventus to two more Serie A titles. However, in May 2006, Juventus became one of the five clubs linked to a Serie A match fixing scandal, the result of the which saw the club relegated to Serie B for the first time in their history. The club was also stripped of the two titles won under Capello in 2005 and 2006.[33]

Many key players left following the demotion to Serie B, including Thuram, star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovi? and defensive stalwart Fabio Cannavaro. However, other big name players remained to help the club return to Serie A. The season was notable because Alessandro Del Piero broke a club record by becoming the first Juventus player to appear 500 times in all competitions for the club.[34] The bianconeri were promoted straight back up as league winners after the 2006?07 season. Since their return to Serie A in the 2007-08 season former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri managed Juventus for two seasons.[35] They finished in 3rd place in their first return season (2007/2008) and qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2008/2009 Champions League Preliminary stages. They qualified to the group stages, and did very well, beating Real Madrid in both home and away legs, but lost in the knockout round against Chelsea F.C.. Claudio Ranieri was sacked following a string of unsuccessful results and Ciro Ferrara was appointed as the coach for the last two games in the season. [36] Later on, Ferrara was appointed as the coach for the 2009/2010 season.

Genoa Cricket and Football Club, commonly referred to as simply Genoa, is an Italian professional football club based in the city of Genoa, Liguria. Although the athletics and cricket club was founded in 1893 by Englishmen as a British sporting club abroad, whose membership was allowed to British citizens exclusively;[5] the footballing section of the club was opened in 1897 by James Richardson Spensley making it the oldest of its kind still active in Italy.[6]

During their long history, Genoa have won the Italian Football Championship nine times. Genoa's first title came at the inaugural championship in 1898 and their last was in 1923?24. They also won the Coppa Italia once. Historically, Genoa is the fourth most successful Italian club in terms of championships won.[7]

The club has played its home games at the 36,536 capacity Stadio Luigi Ferraris[8] since 1911. Since 1946, the ground has been shared with local rivals Sampdoria. Genoa has spent most of its post-war history going up and down between Serie A and Serie B, with also a brief spell in Serie C. After a long story of bad management and an alleged corruption-related scandal, Genoa is now back playing in Serie A, securing a UEFA Europa League placement at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Recent times

Preziosi took over in 2003, when Genoa should have been relegated to C1 series after a dismal season, but was instead "saved" along with Catania and Salernitana by the football federation's controversial decision to extend Serie B to 24 teams. [37] Things started to look up for Genoa; they won Serie B in 2004?05. However, allegations were raised that the club had fixed a match on the last day of the season between themselves and Venezia. The 3?2 victory in the match saw Genoa win the league, with a draw having been good enough to maintain its position in the end. The Disciplinary Committee of FIGC saw fit to instead place Genoa bottom of the league and relegate them down to Serie C1 on 27 July 2005. However, the trial seemed to be unfair since the Disciplinary Commitee is alleged of having wrote the sentence a few days before the trial actually began. Eventually, nobody managed to prove that in front of a court but, on the other side, the Criminal Court of Genoa dismissed all the allegations against the club's owner and management to have fixed the match against S.S.C. Venezia.

For their season in Serie C1 for 2005?06, Genoa were hit with a six point penalty from the previous season. After leading for much of they season, they eventually finished as runners-up and were entered into the play-offs, beating Monza 2-1 on aggregate to achieve promotion back into Serie B.[22] During the summer break Gian Piero Gasperini was brought in as the new manager, he helped the club to gain promotion during the 2006?07 season, it was ensured on the last day of the season where they drew a 0?0 with Napoli, both clubs were happily promoted back into Serie A.[38]

The first serie A championship played by Genoa in 12 years saw it finishing at a respectable tenth place, right after the "big ones" of Italian football. A careful summer market session saw president Preziosi strengthening the core of the team while parting from some players on favourable economical terms[39].
Genoa's aims for the 2008-2009 season were set on a UEFA Cup spot. This was achieved after a strong season which saw the team besting traditional powerhouses like Juventus, Roma and Milan, and winning both derbies against Sampdoria, with Diego Milito finishing among the top scorers of the championship.
Genoa lost Milito and midfielder Thiago Motta to Inter, but invested the considerable revenue (circa 40 millions Euro) in a great expansion of its ranks with players able to carry on a season which will (hopefully) include many Europa League matches away from home.
Given that the main reason for Genoa finishing fifth in season 2008-2009 was the inability of the limited manpower pool to make up for the eventual absence of one of its top players, or to compensate for the odd subpar performance (resulting in points lost to teams like Bologna and Lazio after important victories against stronger teams) the strategy seems sensible to allow the team to keep competing in the high-tier of the Italian and the European championships.

FC Zenit Saint Petersburg (Russian: ?? «?e???» ?????-?????????) is a Russian football club from Saint Petersburg. Founded in 1925 (or in 1914 according to some Russian sources), the club plays in the Russian Premier League and currently is the richest in the country, due to the ownership of the club by Gazprom.[2] Zenit are the 2007 champions of the Russian Premier League, the holders of the 2008 UEFA Cup and of the 2008 UEFA Super Cup after beating Manchester United 2-1 in Monaco.

Zenit in the Soviet League

FC Zenit won their first honours in 1944, claiming the war-time USSR Cup after defeating CSKA in the well-attended final. The club was always adored in Leningrad but wasn't able to make much of an impact in the Soviet League. In 1967, Zenit finished last but were saved from relegation because the powers that were decided it wouldn't be prudent to relegate a Leningrad team during the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution, which occurred in the city.

Composer Dmitry Shostakovich, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and film star Kirill Lavrov were well-known as ardent supporters of Zenit, a passion that is reflected in their attendance of many games, personal correspondence as well as official reports.

FC Zenit won the bronze medal in 1980, achieved Soviet Cup Final 1984 and, finally, won the Soviet League title in 1984. Next year, Zenit beat Soviet Cup holder in Soviet Super Cup (also named as Season Cup).

Zenit in the Russian League

The LOMO optical plant took up the ownership of the team after the war. In 1990 FC Zenit was re-registered as the independent city-owned professional club.

After being relegated in the first year of the Russian League (1992), Zenit returned to the top flight in 1996 and has been decent since. They claimed the 1999 Russian Cup, finished third in the League in 2001, made the Cup final in 2002, became the runners-up in the Premier League and won the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003.

In December 2005 Gazprom took a controlling stake in the club. The deal was announced by Valentina Matviyenko, the Saint Petersburg governor. Gazprom, who bought the majority of the club and invested over a hundred million dollars into buying new players and building a new stadium, the Zenit Stadium, with a capacity of over 60,000 people.

The home ground of FC Zenit is now at Petrovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg. In 2007, the club's former home base at the Kirov Stadium was demolished, to be replaced with a new stadium for FC Zenit.

The new football stadium in St. Petersburg, Russia is currently under construction[3], as of 2007. Once completed in December 2008,[4] it will host the home matches of FC Zenit Saint Petersburg. The stadium will have a capacity of 62,000 people.[4] The name of the future stadium would be Gazprom Arena.

Although Zenit reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup in 2006, a mediocre start to the league season led to the summer replacement of coach Vlastimil Petr?ela. Since July 2006, Zenit has been under the experienced and respected Dick Advocaat[2] Advocaat works together with his Assistant Manager, former Netherlands National Youth Team coach, Cornelius Pot.

Zenit won the 2007 Russian Premier League, their best league achievement since winning the USSR Championship in 1984. That allowed them to compete in the group stage of the Champions League 2008-09. In 2008 Zenit won the Russian Super Cup and reached the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup for the second time in their history. In the first leg of the quarter final away against Bayer Leverkusen from Germany, the team achieved a 4-1 victory. They qualified for the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in their history despite a 0-1 home loss to Bayer in the second leg, and were drawn to play further German opposition in the semi-final, Bayern Munich, considered the top team remaining.

A battling performance in the first leg of the semi-final earned Zenit a 1-1 draw away against Bayern Munich. In the second leg at home, Zenit won 4-0, defeating Bayern Munich 5-1 on aggregate and going through to the UEFA Cup final for the first time in the club's history, where they met the Scottish team Rangers at the City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester on 14 May. Zenit won Glasgow Rangers F.C. 2-0, with goals from Igor Denisov in the 72nd minute and Konstantin Zyryanov in stoppage time, to lift the club's first ever UEFA Cup. Andrei Arshavin was named man of the match.[5] Zenit's Pavel Pogrebnyak became the top scorer of that years tournament.[6]

On 29 August 2008 at Stade Louis II,Monaco, Zenit defeated Manchester United F.C. in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup with a result of 2-1. Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the first goal and Danny Alves scored the second. Danny was named for Man of the Match in his debut for Zenit. For the first time in history a Russian club won this European competition.

In the UEFA Champions League 2008?09 group stage Zenit was grouped with Real Madrid, Juventus, and BATE in Group H, which by some was marked as the group of death. Unfortunately the team finished in 3rd place in group H, behind Juventus and Real Madrid and were unable to progress to the knockout phase of the competition. Andrei Arshavin was also suspended and could not play in Arsenal's cup tie versus Roma. However this position was good enough to earn the club a place in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup last 32 where the team will face the German club VFB Stuttgart for a place in the last 16 of the competition. This allowed the club to defend the trophy that they won the previous season in Manchester however after defeating Stuttgart on away goals, they went on to lose 2-1 over two legs against Udinese.

Associazione Calcio Milan, commonly referred to as AC Milan and as just Milan in Italy, is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. The club was founded in 1899 by English lace-maker Herbert Kilpin, Alfred Edwards, and four other Englishmen[3] and has since spent most of its history in the top flight of Italian football (only two years in Serie B in the eighties).

The club have won 18 officially recognized international titles, tied with Boca Juniors as having the most in the world. Milan have won four world titles, more than any other club in the world; they have won the Intercontinental Cup 3 times and the FIFA Club World Cup once. AC Milan have also won what is today known as the UEFA Champions League on seven occasions; only Real Madrid have won it more times (9).[4] As far as Italian competitions are concerned, Milan are the second most successful club with 17 league titles; only Juventus have won more (27).[5]

Other important titles won by Milan include the European Super Cup a record five times, and the Cup Winners' Cup twice; however, they have never reached the UEFA Cup final (only two semi-finals in 1972 and 2002). This is the only official trophy in existence that Milan has never won. In Italy, they have won the Coppa Italia five times, as well as five Italian Super Cups. Milan is also one of the G-14?s founding members, a group that represented eighteen of the largest and most prestigious European football clubs before its disbandment.[6]

Their home games are played at San Siro, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. The ground, which is shared with rivals Internazionale, is the largest in Italian football, with total capacity of 80,018.

The club was founded as a cricket club in 1899 by British expatriates Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin, who came from the British city of Nottingham. In honor of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city's name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano (though it was forced to do it during the fascist regime, like Genoa and Internazionale); it should be noted that the Italian pronunciation is actually MEE-lan, coming from the local dialect. Milan won their first Italian championship title in 1901, and then again in 1906 and 1907.

In 1908 the club experienced a split caused by internal disagreements over the signing of foreign players, which led to the forming of another Milan-based team, Internazionale. Following these events, Milan did not manage to win a single domestic title until 1950-51. In 1963 they ensured their first continental title, winning European Cup beating Benfica in the final. This success was repeated in 1969, and followed by an Intercontinental Cup title the same year. Following retirement of Gianni Rivera, Milan started a declining period, during which they were involved in the 1980 Totonero scandal and were relegated to Serie B as punishment, for the first time in their history. The scandal was centred on a betting syndicate paying players and officials to fix the outcome of matches. Milan quickly returned back to Serie A, but returned to Serie B only one year later as they ended their 1981-82 Serie A campaign in the relegation zone .

In 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club, and immediately invested a lot of money in the team, appointing rising coach Arrigo Sacchi at the helm of the rossoneri and signing a Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. This was the beginning of the most successful time in the club's history, as AC Milan won seven domestic titles, five UEFA Champions League trophies, and three Intercontinental Cups.

More recently, Milan were involved in the 2006 Serie A scandal where five teams were accused of fixing matches by selecting favourable referees. Milan were initially punished with a 15 point deduction and consequently did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League. An appeal saw their penalty reduced to 8 points and allowed to retain their 2006-07 Champions League participation, where they won the competition.

Unione Sportiva Lecce or simply U.S. Lecce is an Italian football club based in Lecce, Apulia. Lecce plays in the Italian Serie B, after being relegated from the Serie A in the 2008-09 season.

The club was formed in 1908 and has spent a large part of its seasons bouncing between Italy's second division and Serie A, where the team gained its first promotion in 1985.

The team plays in red and yellow stripes. Lecce's home games are played in the 36,285-seater Stadio Via del Mare. Lecce players and fans are referred to as salentini.

Lecce was founded as Sporting Club Lecce on 15 March 1908,[2] initially the club comprise of football, track-and-field and cycling sports. The first club president was Francesco Marangi. The first colours worn by Lecce during this time were black and white stripes, known in Italy as bianconeri.

In its formative years, Lecce played in mostly regional leagues and competitions. During the 1923/24 season the club broke up, before coming back on 16 September 1927 as Unione Sportiva Lecce. The club were still wearing black and white stripes (similar to Juventus) at this point, and the first president under the name Unione Sportiva Lecce was Luigi Lopez y Rojo.

Consolidation, promotion and new relegation

The club had a mixed start to the 2006-07 season in Serie B, winning three home games (including a win against early league leaders, Genoa), though they have suffered poor away form. After a large drop in form, recording 10 losses in 18 matches, Zdenek Zeman was sacked as manager and replaced by Giuseppe Papadopulo. On March 10, 2007 Lecce clinched a historical victory over Frosinone, beaten 5-0 at Stadio Via del Mare. Having gained 36 points in the second-leg part of the season, Lecce ended the season in the middle of the table (9th place).

The 2007-08 season saw Lecce fight for a place in the Italian Serie A for the next season. Despite earning 83 points (12 more than sixth-placed Pisa) and boasting the best defence in the tournament, the giallorossi were forced to face play-offs for promotion in the top flight. In the semi final they beat Pisa in both legs (1-0 away and 2-1 at home) to secure a place in the final against AlbinoLeffe. Then they won the first leg 1-0 away, before securing a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Via del Mare to gain promotion.

FC Dynamo Kyiv (Ukrainian: ?? ?????? ????, FK Dynamo Kyyiv) is a professional football club based in the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev, or using alternative English spelling, Kyiv. Founded in 1927, the club currently participates in the Ukrainian Premier League and have spent their entire history in the top league of Soviet and later Ukrainian football. Dynamo Kyiv has won twelve league titles, nine Ukrainian Cups, one UEFA Super Cup and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups. Additionally, they have also won 13 USSR Championships, 9 USSR Cups, and 3 USSR Super Cups, making Dynamo one of the most successful clubs in the history of the Soviet Top League.[1]

Dynamo's home is the 16,900 capacity[2] Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium in Kyiv, with a few bigger games played at Olimpiysky National Sports Complex.

Τhe Death Match

The story is often told of how the Dynamo team, playing as "Start, City of Kyiv All-Stars", was executed by a firing squad in the summer of 1942 for defeating an All-Star team from the German armed forces by 5 goals to 1. The actual story, as recounted by Y. Kuznetsov, is considerably more complex.[3] This match has subsequently become known as "The Death Match".

After the Nazi occupation of Ukraine began, several members of the Dynamo team found employment in the city's Bakery No. 3, and had continued to play amateur football. During Kiev's invasion, the collective was spotted by Germans and were invited to play against an army team. The collective would play under the name of "Start" and had comprised of eight players from Dynamo (Mykola Trusevych, Mikhail Svyridovskiy, Mykola Korotkykh, Oleksiy Klimenko, Fedir Tyutchev, Mikhail Putistin, Ivan Kuzmenko, Makar Honcharenko) and three players from Lokomotiv Kiev (Vladimir Balakin, Vasil Sukharev and Mikhail Melnyk).

In July and August 1942 "Start" played a series of matches against German and allied sides. On July 12 a German army team was defeated. A stronger army team was selected for the next match on July 17, which "Start" defeated 6-0. On July 19 "Start" defeated the Hungarian team MSG Wal by 5-1. The Hungarians proposed a return match, held on July 26, but were defeated again 3-2.

"Start"'s streak was noticed and a match was announced for August 6 against a "most powerful" "undefeated" German Luftwaffe Flakelf team, but despite the game being talked up by the newspapers, they failed to report the 5-1 result. On August 9 "Start" played a "friendly" against Flakelf and again defeated them. The team defeated Rukh 8-0 on August 16, and afterwards, some of "Start"'s players were arrested by the Gestapo, tortured ? Mykola Korotkykh dying under torture ? and sent to the nearby labour camp at Siretz. It is also conjectured that the players were arrested due to the intrigues of Georgy Shvetsov, founder and trainer of the "Rukh" team, as the arrests were made in a couple of days after "Start" defeated "Rukh".[4]

In February 1943, following an attack by anti-German partisans or a conflict of the prisoners and administration, one-third of the prisoners at Siretz were killed in reprisal, including Ivan Kuzmenko, Oleksey Klymenko, and the goalkeeper Mykola Trusevich. Three of the other players, Makar Honcharenko, Fedir Tyutchev and Mikhail Sviridovskiy, who were in a work squad in the city that day, were arrested a few days later[4] or, according to other sources, escaped and hid in the city until it was liberated[citation needed].

The story inspired two films: the 1961 Hungarian film drama "K?t f?lid? a pokolban" and the 1981 American film Escape to Victory.

Recent Years

After the Soviet Union's collapse, the club, now using the Ukrainian name FC Dynamo Kyiv, became a member of the newly-formed Ukrainian Premier League. Dynamo's status as the country's principal club did not change with the break-up as they went on to dominate domestic competitions, winning or being runner-up in every year of the Premier League's existence and becoming a fixture in the UEFA Champions League. Its main rival in Ukraine is Shakhtar Donetsk, a team from the Donbas region, who placed second to Dynamo several times before winning its first Premier League in 2002.

In 1996, the club modified their logo to the one that continues to be used today. In 2007, as a part of club's 80 year anniversary two gold stars were added to the top of the crest, representing ten Ukrainian championship titles and ten USSR champion titles. Due to club's poor performance in the UEFA Champions League during the last two seasons, Dynamo's management resolved to a somewhat unexpected decision; for the first time in club's history a foreign manager was invited. Previously in Dynamo, only former players or Dynamo football academy graduates became managers, but in December 2007 Russian coach Yuri Semin was invited to become the new manager of Dynamo Kyiv. Semin's first success came shortly after in a friendly competition Channel One Cup organised in Israel over winter-break. It went on to confidently defeat both Dynamo's former top rival Spartak Moscow 3:0, and Dynamo's current top rival Shakhtar Donetsk in the final, winning the competition for the first time in its history. However, the club yielded to Shakhtar in Ukrainian Cup and Ukrainian Premier League in 2008. In 2009. in the club's most successful European campaign since 1999, it reached the semifinals of UEFA Cup (eliminating such teams as Valencia CF and Paris Saint Germain) but was defeated there by Shakhtar Donetsk losing in Donetsk 1:2 after the 1:1 home draw. However, the club celebrated its 13th Ukrainian Premier League title.

Udinese Calcio is an Italian football club based in Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and currently plays in the Serie A.

Udinese has been chosen as the best team of the year 2009.

The traditional team home kit is black and white striped shirt, black shorts, and white socks. The club plays in the Stadio Friuli, which has a capacity of 41,652 (although it is currently limited to 30,900). It has a large number of fans in Friuli and surrounding areas, and it is sometimes seen as the best symbol of Friulian pride.

The 90s and 2000s: Europe
Stadio Friuli before a Champions League match

During the following years, Udinese became a yo-yo club, frequently being promoted to Serie A and relegated back to B. This situation lasted until the 1995-96 season, from which point on, they established themselves in Serie A.

The 1996-97 season saw Udinese qualify for the UEFA Cup, with Alberto Zaccheroni as manager. The following season, they managed a resounding third place finish behind Juventus and Internazionale, largely thanks to Oliver Bierhoff's 27 goals.

In March 2001, Luciano Spalletti was appointed manager, replacing Luigi De Canio. Spalletti managed to lead the team to survival on the penultimate matchday. Following brief periods with Roy Hodgson and Giampiero Ventura on the bench, Spalletti was again appointed manager of Udinese at the beginning of the 2002-03 season, finding an organized and ambitious club which again reached the UEFA Cup, playing attacking and entertaining football.

The surprising fourth place finish at the end of the 2004-05 season saw Udinese achieve their first qualification for the UEFA Champions League in the history of the club. At the end of that same season, Spalletti announced his intention to leave Udinese.

The following season, Udinese played in the Champions League preliminary round, beating Sporting Clube de Portugal 4-2 on aggregate. Udinese were drawn in a tough group alongside Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, and FC Barcelona.
Mauricio Isla (left) and Alexis S?nchez (right) playing for Udinese in the UEFA Cup.

Despite their first match ending in a brilliant 3-0 win over PAOK, courtesy of a brilliant Vincenzo Iaquinta hat trick, the team failed to qualify for the knockout rounds, coming third in their group, equal on points with second placed Werder and behind eventual champions Barcelona.

After a year in the Champions League, Udinese finished 10th and returned once more to midtable mediocrity. The turning point occurred during the summer of 2007, when the club announced the appointment of Sicilian manager Pasquale Marino and also made various quality purchases including Fabio Quagliarella and G?khan Inler.

The 2007-08 season started well with a draw at home against champions Internazionale, but the enthusiasm was quickly erased after the first home match which finished in a 5-0 loss to newly promoted Napoli. After this match, Udinese's fortunes changed, starting with a victory over Juventus thanks to a late Antonio Di Natale goal. Approaching the end of the season, Udinese found themselves in fourth position surprising everyone. They could not maintain this pace however, and fell to 7th. The team continued to fight until the penultimate round for a Champions League place with AC Milan, Fiorentina and Sampdoria, however, and had to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

At the start of the 2008-09 season, during the press conference to present the new season's shirt, the new official website was also presented, and an absolute novelty in the Italian championship, the first Web TV channel dedicated to a football club called Udinese Channel was launched, totally free and visible worldwide. In 2008-2009, Udinese had a mixed bag of results in Serie A with 3-1 win at Roma and a 2-1 win over Juventus as the pleasing ones. But 1-0 losses against Reggina and Cheivo and Torino dented hopes of Champions League. Meanwhile in Europe, Udinese were in a group with potential favourites Tottenham Hotspur, N.E.C., Spartak Moscow, and Dinamo Zagreb, they eased through the group with a convincing 2-0 win against Tottenham. They beat Lech Pozna? in the next round 4-3 on aggregate, and then they met holders Zenit St. Petersburg and won convincingly 2-1 on aggregate. Next up, Udinese were favourites against Werder Bremen but, with several injuries to star players Antonio Di Natale, Samir Handanovi?, and Felipe, they lost 6-4 on aggregate. Fabio Quagliarella managed eight goals in the campaign.

Parma Football Club (formerly Parma Associazione Calcio) is an Italian football club based in Parma, Emilia-Romagna, that are competing in the 2009-10 Serie A season. The club plays its home matches in the 27,906 seat Stadio Ennio Tardini. Nicknames include Ducali (The Duchy Men), Crociati (Crusaders) and Gialloblu (Yellow-Blues).

Parma debuted in Serie A in 1990 and would quickly establish themselves as a top-flight team in Italian football from then on. The team became one of the top Italian teams in the 1990s and early 2000s, especially in the domestic and European Cup competitions, having been crowned UEFA Cup champions. Following the Parmalat scandal in late 2003, which caused the owning company to collapse, Parma has lately experienced a troubled period, having been under controlled administration until January 2007 as well as having to fight to avoid relegation.

Financial troubles and Serie B return: 2000s

Parma started off the 1999-00 season well, winning the Italian Super Cup, but they were knocked out of the Champions League early and ended the season in fourth place, level with Internazionale but lost the play-off 3-1.

Arrigo Sacchi returned to the club as manager in January 2001, but the former Italy coach soon stepped down due to ill-health. Renzo Ulivieri took over and took the side to fourth in the league once more and another Champions League qualification although they lost the Coppa Italia finals to Fiorentina.

2001?02

At the end of the season, Parma sold Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram, S?rgio Concei??o, and M?rcio Amoroso; signed S?bastien Frey, Matteo Ferrari, Martin Djetou, Aimo Diana, Marco Marchionni, Hidetoshi Nakata, and Emiliano Bonazzoli as replacement.

Another manager change came for the 2001-02 season as Pietro Carmignani took Parma to another Coppa Italia triumph. They beat Juventus 1-0 at home before losing 2-1 in Turin; they won the trophy via the away goals rule, this was Parma's third time winning the Italian Cup.

2002?03

Again, the winning players were turned for cash: Fabio Cannavaro was sold to Internazionale, Marco Di Vaio to Juventus, and Johan Micoud to Werder Bremen. In exchange, players such as Daniele Bonera, Matteo Brighi, Mark Bresciano, Adriano, Adrian Mutu, and Alberto Gilardino were signed. Moreover, Mat?as Almeyda was swapped for Vratislav Gre?ko as well as Luigi Sartor for Sebastiano Siviglia.

2003?04

In the Summer 2003, Adrian Mutu left for Chelsea for a fee of £15.8 million, while Aimo Diana left for Sampdoria; Stephen Appiah for Juventus; and Sabri Lamouchi was swapped for Domenico Morfeo.

Although the team's sponsor Parmalat was facing financial scandal during the season, Parma finished 5th.

2004?05

Once again, players left for other teams: Hidetoshi Nakata for Fiorentina, Simone Barone for Palermo, Matteo Ferrari for Roma, while Cesare Bovo, Alessandro Potenza, and Alessandro Budel were loaned from Roma, Internazionale, and AC Milan, respectively. Also added to the young talent squad were F?bio Simpl?cio and Vince Grella.

Silvio Baldini was appointed as coach, but later Carmignani was in charge again.

Parma played a fair 2004?05 season, led by team stars such as S?bastien Frey, Alberto Gilardino, Andrea Pisanu, Marco Marchionni, Domenico Morfeo, and Mark Bresciano, and were able to avoid relegation in advance of four matches to the end of the championship. They reached the semi-final of UEFA Cup in 2004-05.

2005?06

Capital problems came to a head in the 2005-06 season: In the transfer market, Frey and Gilardino were sold, but Parma was only able to acquire (through loan) Cristiano Lupatelli and Bernardo Corradi as replacement. The team also announced it was to be bought in 2005 by former Real Madrid chairman Lorenzo Sanz, and was reincorporated at that time as Parma Football Club. However, successively Sanz renounced to conclude the bid. Mario Beretta was appointed as new coach. Despite all their troubles, Parma finished mid-table and later qualified for the UEFA Cup 2005-06 due to the 2006 Italian football scandal.

2006?07

Annual sale of Parma turned to Daniele Bonera, Mark Bresciano, and F?bio Simpl?cio. With the cash, Igor Budan, Andrea Gasbarroni, and Vitali Kutuzov were signed.

On 24 January 2007, Tommaso Ghirardi was announced as new owner of Parma FC, following a public auction sale.[1] Ghirardi, a 31-year-old entrepreneur and owner of Serie C2 club AC Carpenedolo, became also chairman of Parma FC, ending three years of state-controlled management. On 12 February, second-last placed Parma fired head coach Pioli and replaced him with Claudio Ranieri who, against overwhelming odds, managed to avoid relegation to Serie B on the final day of the season.[2]

2007?08

In the 2007?08 season, Parma again battled with relegation, presenting three different head coaches (Domenico Di Carlo, H?ctor C?per, and caretaker Andrea Manzo) during the whole season, but were ultimately unable to preserve their Serie A status, losing 2?0 at home to champions Internazionale on the final day of the season, consigning them to Serie B football next season.

Reginaldo and Cristiano Lucarelli were the only major transfer, along with the loan move of Corradi.

2008-09

Selling youngster Daniele Dessena and Luca Cigarini became cash flow of Parma. Milan youngster Luca Antonelli and Alberto Paloschi were also bought. Andrea Gasbarroni was exchanged with Julio C?sar de Le?n.

With a 2-2 draw on 16 May, Parma were automatically promoted back to Serie A with two games left to play.

FC Bayern Munich (German: Fu?ball-Club Bayern M?nchen) is a German sports club based in Munich, Bavaria. It is best known for its professional football team, which is the most successful club in German football, having won 21 German titles and 14 cups.

The club was founded in 1900 by eleven football players led by Franz John.[1] Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932,[2] the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963.[3] In the middle of the 1970s, the club had its period of greatest success, when the famous team led by Franz Beckenbauer won the European Cup three times in a row (1974?76). In recent years they have been by far the most successful team in German football, winning seven of the last ten championships. The club's last international title was the Intercontinental Cup in 2001.

Since the beginning of the 2005?06 season, Munich plays its home games in the Allianz Arena. Previously the team had played for 33 years in the Olympic Stadium. The team colours are red and white, and the team crest shows the colours of Bavaria.[4]

Bayern is a membership-based club and with more than 147,000 members.[5] There are also more than 2,400 officially-registered fan clubs with about 177,000 members.[5] The club has other departments for chess, handball, basketball, gymnastics, bowling, table tennis, referees, and senior football with more than 1,100 active members.[6]

Renewed international success (1998?present)

From 1998?2004 Bayern were coached by Ottmar Hitzfeld. In Hitzfeld's first season, Bayern won the Bundesliga and came close to winning the Champions League, losing 2?1 to Manchester United in injury time after leading for most of the match. The 1999?2000 season resulted in Bayern winning their third league and cup double. A third consecutive Bundesliga title followed in 2001, won in a finish on the final day of the league season. Days later, Bayern won the Champions League for the fourth time after a 25 year gap, defeating Valencia on penalties. The 2001?02 season began with a win in the International Cup, but ended trophyless otherwise. A season later Bayern won their fourth double, leading the league by a record margin.[22] Hitzfeld's reign ended in 2004, with Bayern underperforming, including a cup defeat by second division Alemannia Aachen.

Felix Magath took over and led Bayern to two consecutive Doubles. Prior to the start of the 2005?06 season, Bayern moved from the Olympic Stadium to the new Allianz Arena, which the club shares with 1860 Munich. On the field their performance in 2006?07 was erratic. Trailing in the league and having lost to Alemannia Aachen in the cup yet again, coach Magath was sacked shortly after the winter break.[23]

Former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld returned to Munich in January 2007, but Bayern finished the 2006?07 season fourth, thus failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in more than a decade. Additional losses in the cup and the League Cup left the club with no honours for the season. For the 2007?08 season, Bayern Munich made drastic squad changes to help retool and rebuild. They signed a total of eight new players and sold, released or loaned out nine of their existing players. Luca Toni from Fiorentina, Miroslav Klose from Werder Bremen, and record signing Franck Rib?ry from Marseille headlined the signings.[24] The new additions paid off, as the Reds went on to win the 2008 DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga, being on top of the standings on every single week of play.[25]

On 11 January 2008 J?rgen Klinsmann was named as Hitzfeld's successor, taking charge on 1 July 2008. He signed a two year contract.[26] During the first half of the 2008?09 Bundesliga season, Bayern got off to a rocky start, winning just two games until day six, but started to catch up afterwards. Bayer Leverkusen eliminated Bayern Munich in quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. In the Champions League Bayern also reached the quarter-finals. They were eliminated by FC Barcelona after winning Group F and defeating Sporting CP in the first knockout round, achieving a Champions League record aggregate of 12?1. On April 27, two days after a home defeat against FC Schalke 04 which saw Bayern drop to the third place in the table, Klinsmann was fired. This was preceded by several disappointing results such as a 5?1 aggregate loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, and a 5?1 loss to the would-be champions VfL Wolfsburg. Former coach Jupp Heynckes was named as caretaker until the end of the season.[27] Bayern eventually finished second, thus qualifying directly for the Champions League in 2009?10.

Empoli Football Club is a football club based in Empoli, Tuscany, formed in 1920 though its first official match was in 1921.

In recent years, the club has all too often been bouncing between Italy's two top divisions. Most recently, Empoli was relegated from Serie A to Serie B in 2004, but secured promotion back to Serie A in the next season, finishing first while Genoa were in last position in Serie B. 2007?08 is the seventh Serie A season for Empoli, quite a record for a town of only 45,000 inhabitants, whose team founds its fortunes on their youth divisions, among the most renowned in Italy.

The team's colours are blue and white.

Empoli's history was relatively obscure before the 1980s when they attained Serie B status. In 1986, this small-town club managed the remarkable feat of promotion to Serie A. Playing their first few home games in Florence, Empoli's Serie A debut resulted in a 1?0 win over Inter. Helped by a 9-point deduction from Udinese, they just avoided relegation with only 23 points and 13 goals in 30 games. Empoli themselves received a 5-point penalty the following season, and were relegated despite an improved showing. They were relegated again to Serie C1 in 1989.

They then spent several seasons in Serie C1 before returning to Serie B in 1996 and achieving a second successive promotion in 1997. With Luciano Spalletti at the helm, Empoli defied the odds to finish in 12th place and avoid relegation. Relegation the following year began a three-year stay in Serie B, in which time the club became renowned for nurturing its own outstanding young talent.

Promotions to Serie A in 2002 and 2005 have seen the club emerge as brave battlers against relegation. They ended the 2005?06 Serie A season in a respectable 10th place. As a result of the Serie A match-fixing scandal at the end of that season, they gained qualification for the UEFA Cup for the following season, however bizarrely they did not play in it because the club management failed to ask for a UEFA License. In the 2006?07 season, the club gained once again qualified for the UEFA Cup.

In 2007-08, Empoli marked their debut in the UEFA Cup with a two-legged match against FC Zurich, losing 4?2 on aggregate. A poor showing in the initial part of the season then led chairman Fabrizio Corsi to sack Luigi Cagni, who led the Tuscans to UEFA Cup qualification, and replace him with Alberto Malesani.[1] Cagni was re-appointed on March 31, 2008 but the team faced relegation after the final match of the season. Cagni quit and Empoli hired Silvio Baldini to lead the team during the 2008-09 season.
