1. Introduction

This article studies the effect of each training session (eg, 5 a side large) on the attributes of the players.
The way I chose to do this is by building training schedules that are based solely on one training session. Then I ran the game on Holiday Mode and monitored the improvement of the players' attributes over a period of ~4.5 months. At the end of this article you can find a summary of the results for each session.

I ran the experiments using ΕΡ3+injury fix from 20/8/2002 to 6/1/2003. I monitored the improvement of these 17 players of the Greek club Panathinaikos (PAO):
Henriksen, Fyssas, Seitaridis, Saric, Gittas, Gkoumas, Kyrgiakos, Basinas, Konstantinidis, Kolkka, Karagkounis, Boateng, Chainho, Vlaovic, Lyberopoulos, Konstantinou, Olisadebe.

I only used the personnel (coaches, physios) that was available in PAO at the beginnning of the game- I didn't buy anybody. The 17 players in the experiment were coached by 1 coach with cautious mentality and general style, and one coach with attacking mentality and fitness-based style. A physio was also assigned to the schedule.

Note that these are NOT recommended training schedules. Apart from the attributes that are mentioned to have been improved each time, the rest of them drop. But I didn't care about that, since the goal of these experiments was to find the attributes that are improved by each training session.

One of the problems I had to face was that some of the players' attributes improve irrespective of the training. In order to avoid mistakes, I ran a lot of experiments for each player and at the end it was obvious in which cases this happened. For example, Konstantinidis' Set Pieces attribute and Konstantinou's Work Rate improve from 1 to 2 and from 11 to 12 respectively in the vast majority of the experiments. Such improvements were not taken into account in the published results. Moreover, Seitaridis almost always improved a lot regardless of training, and so his improvement was filtered out whenever this happened.

For each training session I state two kinds of results. One of them is usually results obtained after imposing the same training 10 times a week, and one of them is after training 15 times a week. By comparing these results we find that each training session has a big effect on some attributes (the ones that are improved after training 10 times a week or equivalently twice a day), and a smaller effect on others (the ones that only improve after training 15 times a week or 3 times a day).

So, practically, this means that the attributes that fall in the second category (improvement only when the specific training is repeated 3 times a day) will only improve in a "normal" training schedule if the effect of the used training session is combined with the positive effect of another on the same day.

To cut a long story short, the attributes that are mentioned below each training session in the following posts are the ones that the specific session improves.

I would like to thank dgiras for his contribution to these results, and Greco for the useful discussions.

Note:
In this work I only study the effect of training on the attributes of the players and not on the tactics of the game.

PS. This work started on May 26 2003, matured in the Training forum of the Greek CM4 Research Website cmgreece.com and finished on June 3 2003.

Addition 1:
Some info about the used coaches' attributes was included.

2. Process

1. I run the game on holiday mode until August 20 2002 using the default preseason schedule. I save the game.
2. I take down the attributes of the 17 players on that day.
3. I build a training schedule that consists of one only training session (eg 5 a side small) repeated 10-15 times a week.
4. I run the game on holiday mode until January 6 2003.
5. I take down the changes on the players' attributes.
6. I correct the results by filtering out the random improvements (see above).
7. I repeat the experiment until I notice the emerging pattern.
8. Say that I ran the experiment 10 times. I choose 1 or 2 of the times (the ones with the most characteristic results). I post these results here. (the results are similar in all different repeatitions of the same experiment).
9. Repeat steps 2-8 for another training session.

3. Highlights

-The training session "Crosses" improves the ability of a player in Set Pieces and Penalties (penalty taking).
-The training session "Penalties" improves the ability of a player in crossing and heading the ball.
-The training session "Agility" improves the ability of a player in dribbling.
-The training session "Heading" does not improve the heading attribute of a player. But it does improve the dribblilng and the passing attributes.

4. Results....

Shooting

Experiments 1:
I used this session 2 times a day, 5 days a week, and filled the rest of the program with "Rest". Training after match day=yes.

Experimental Results:

Long Shots:
12 players were improved, 16 points of improvement in total.
Finishing:
11 players were improved, 16 points of improvement in total.

Experiments 2:
I used this session 3 times a day, 5 days a week, and filled the rest of the program with "Rest". Training after match day=yes.

Experimetal results:

Long Shots:
12 players were improved, 14 points of improvement in total.
Finishing:
10 players were improved, 14 points of improvement in total.

Conclusions
1) Shooting only improves Finishing and Long Shots.
2) These two attributes are connected. If a training regime improves one of them, then it necesserily improves the other one too. This is further proved by the results of the other training experiments.
3) In Experiments 2 some players did not improve. I guess this happened because they were "overworked".

Sprints

Experiments 1:

I used this session 8 times a week and filled the rest of the week with "Rest". Training after match day=no.

Experimental Results:

Strength:
7 players were improved, 7 points of improvement in total.
Jumping:
7 players were improved, 7 points of improvement in total.
Stamina:
6 players were improved, 7 points of improvement in total.
Acceleration:
5 players were improved, 5 points of improvement in total.

Experiments 2:

I used this session 3 times a day, 5 days a week, and filled the rest of the program with "Rest". Training after match day=no.

Experimental Results:

Acceleration:
5 players were improved, 5 points of improvement in total.
Strength:
4 players were improved, 4 points of improvement in total.
Jumping:
4 players were improved, 4 points of improvement in total.
Stamina:
4 players were improved, 4 points of improvement in total.

Conclusions:

1) The above 4 attributes are connected to each other. As the results of the other training sessions further prove, when a training regime improves one of them, it necessarily improves the other 3 too.
2) As you can see there was a slight redistribution in Experiments 2. This is probably due to some players being overworked and not improving as much as they should.

11 players were improved, 13 points of improvement in total.
Tackling:
11 players were improved, 11 points of improvement in total.

Experiments 2:
I used this session 3 times a day, 5 days a week, and filled the rest of the program with "Rest". Training after match day=no.

Experimental results:

Off the ball:
13 players were improved, 21 points of improvement in total.
Influence:
13 players were improved, 16 points of improvement in total.
Decisions:
11 players were improved, 13 points of improvement in total.
Positioning:
10 players were improved, 17 points of improvement in total.
Marking:
08 players were improved, 10 points of improvement in total.
