Sneak Preview of the 3D Match Engine

It’s probably the worst kept FML secret ever, but 3D will be making its debut in the next major update of Football Manager Live.

Since the reboot in March things have been pretty manic within the team and we’ve spent a lot of time supporting the game, polishing and making performance improvements.
Thanks to everyone for your patience and at times understanding during this important phase and although we’re not there yet we’re continuing to make great strides behind the scenes.

3D development has been ongoing for many months and most of the initial work was to allow it to be ported over. Most important moving forward is the fact that it’s now shared between FM and FML.

In amongst all of that preparation work, we’ve managed to secure a bit of an exclusive in that FML will be the first time that you’ll be able to play night matches under floodlights within the 3D engine and we’ve got a few screenshots showing that off.

There’s been a few leaked screenshots from our beta testers so some of you will have already seen that we’ve broken down the assets required by the 3D engine. Whilst this doesn’t mean that much to most it does ensure that if there are new animations or changes to existing 3D assets you wont have to re-download everything each time – just the bits necessary.

3D is optional so those of you that don’t like it will be able to turn it off (or not even download it). Matches can be played where one manager is on 2D and one is on 3D and this will form a large part of our testing in the final phases.

For those of you with machines not capable of running 3D the system will alert you if it thinks you might struggle however if you’ve experience of playing FM you will already know the limitations of your system.

In the coming weeks we hope to bring you a little video of the 3D in action.

Summary

1.6 brings the 3D view to FML for the first time (optional download). There have been a number of enhancements to the match page that benefit both 2D and 3D views, in particular the introduction of an 'expanded' match view.

Matches and match day

- Expanded match view allows the pitch area to fill the whole window apart from the commentary bar and timeline
- Re-worked match speeds as 1.0 x real time, 1.5 x real time, 2.0 x real time and 3.0 x real time (so there are four available now). This allows people to watch 3D in all its real-time glory, while also providing an even faster top-end speed than currently exists for those that way inclined
- 1.6 - fixed disconnection when renaming a match plan to fewer than 5 characters; match plan names must be a minimum of 5 characters in length

Match Engine

Match v843
----------
- Stop referee from blowing for end of period when team on counter in opposition half
- Fix injury treated player coming back onto pitch from behind goal at unrealistic moment
- Fix some issues with referee and linesman positioning
- Fixed instances of AI making multiple early subs when a player is injured
- Try to make full backs take more responsibility for strikers when playing against narrow 433 formations
- Reduced effect of headers won/lost on player match ratings
- Fixed rare bug causing set piece to be taken from wrong place
- Fixed incorrect attribute being used to decide goal kick accuracy
- Fixed occasional instances of passes not being counted for stats
- Fixed off ball movement that takes attacking player away from ball and opposition goal
- Made keepers yet a little more likely to come for crosses
- Improved willingness of players to support team mate who is out wide with the ball
- Made defenders a little quicker to close down ball player around own area regardless of closing down instruction
- Improved use of passes for players to run onto slightly
- Reduced passes into feet of team mates with back to ball

Match v844
----------
- Adjusted way that expected result is calculated for FML matches, due to slightly different reputation scales
- Fixed some headers being too powerful when little momentum on ball or player leap
- Adjusted player acceleration curve slightly so they take a little longer to get right up to top speed but quicker to around half speed
- Made semi sensible choice of captain for FML matches where none is passed in for a team, instead of keeper
- Fixed bug that could cause keeper to rush to edge of area and leave open goal
- Tweak to prevent defenders getting too tight to player who can outrun them
- Small tweaks to crossing AI
- Small tweak to match ratings to reduce effect of high numbers of runs past opponents Player Progression & Morale

Match v845
----------

- Tried to make players support ball player a little more
- Fixed issue with MC's sometimes covering for wide midfielders when their team lose the ball, leaving gaps in the centre
- Reduced instances of attackers being over cautious of moving offside when opposition d-line is retreating
- Fixed issue causing some truly awful throw ins
- Made players a little more savvy and patient when they have ball at feet and not under too much pressure
- Made players asked to run with ball a little more willing to take a risk when not in defensive position
- Reduced number of difficult passes across defence or to keeper eg on wrong foot and a volley
- Reduced number of passes played unneccesarily ahead of team mate in non creative situations
- Reduced number of obviously interceptable passes made in non creative situations
- Increased pace on some crosses that were too floated

Match


Player contracts and wages

- Made a change so that free agent wage demands are now updated each game day which is inline with their reputation changes.

Player Progression & Morale

- Changes to player progression which mainly lower the rate younger players progress
- Fixed bug 4483 - Coach report recomends a player on trial to be placed on the transfer list
- Fixed bug 4860 - News item generated for a new signing that had previously been considering retirement is incomplete
- Made some adjustments to the attribute distribution of fantasy players.
- Made some changes to the way player attributes are assigned (more inline with FM 10.3)
- Made sure there is a minium amount of youth players generated each day that reach the free agent list.
- Made starting current ability for youth players less linear in relation to potential
- Removed "Wants a new challenge" morale effect
- Made some adjustments to the training level required for youth players to improve so that its harder for youth players regress in attributes when they are actually progressing.

Moderation

- Added moderator option 'Set Temporary Overdraft...' which can be used to get people out of a hole in certain circumstances

Skills

- Fixed a bug in which the known skills pie chart would not accurately reflect unspecialised skills - showing them at the specialist rate instead

Youth Academies

- Added date opened field to youth academy information panel; Also we now store more details about youth academy changes made.

Other

- Fixed crash navigating away from world rankings page when filtering for player data
- Fixed 4856, 4857 - Fixed some text formatting issues in some of the skill descriptions
