F.D.D : PreSelected Squads
Ο Ov Collyer στο forum της SI wrote:Following the discussion thread on pre-selected squads (here http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php?t=176426), I said I'd produce some examples of the kind of pools that might be allocated to a club at the start of a GW.

The idea would be that you can select your initial squad from the players in the pool you are allocated.

This is based on early prototype code which is able to create over a 1000 roughly like these 5 examples I have picked out at random, each with a few under 50 players. This is from a newly created Gameworld.

If you have an aversion to numbers and stats, then look away now

GREAT JOB SI

Thats the point!

Introduction

The general idea behind this suggestion is to tie more of your income into your performances in competitions in a given season, and as a result increase both the sense of a 'dangling carrot' where performance in a single season leads directly to greater purchasing power for the next, and a heightened sense needing to perform to maintain your status for those teams choosing to live on the edge of their budget.

Essentially, reputation would account for 50% of your income (via your stadium) with the remaining 50% accounted for directly by competition performances.

As part of this, we can simplify the financial system a little by removing FA media money and General Income entirely; managers then have two simple income streams to keep an eye on - their stadium (longer-term) income and their competition (shorter-term) income.

Income Under The Current System

Firstly, here is a summary of the main income streams under the current system:

General Income

Minimum - 25k (can decrease down to 5k as total wages decrease from 100k down to 0k for low reputation clubs)
Maximum - 75k

Stadium Income (default stadium)

Minimum - 75k (can decrease down to 20k as total wages decrease from 100k down to 0k for low reputation clubs)
Maximum - 90k

Stadium Income (top stadium)

Minimum - 75k (can decrease down to 20k as total wages decrease from 100k down to 0k for low reputation clubs)
Maximum - 300k

FA Media Money

All clubs receive around 17k

League Prize Money

Top of top division - about 800k (29k)
Bottom of lowest division - about 250k (9k)

Summary

0k wages, default stadium:

Minimum: 5k+20k+17k+9k=51k
Maximum: 75k+90k+17k+29k=211k

100k+ wages, default stadium:

Minimum: 25k+75k+17k+9k=126k
Maximum: 75k+90k+17k+29k=211k

0k wages, top stadium:

Minimum: 5k+20k+17k+9k=51k
Maximum: 75k+300k+17k+29k=421k

100k+ wages, top stadium:

Minimum: 25k+75k+17k+9k=126k
Maximum: 75k+300k+17k+29k=421k

Income Under Possible New System

Now here is how things might look under the new system:

General Income

Removed completely

Stadium Income (default stadium)

Minimum - 50k (no longer dependent on wages)
Maximum - 75k

Stadium Income (top stadium)

Minimum - 50k (no longer dependent on wages)
Maximum - 200k

FA Media Money

Removed completely

League Prize Money

Top of top division - 5.6m (200k)
Bottom of lowest division - 0k (0k)

Summary

0k wages, default stadium:

Minimum: 50k
Maximum: 75k+200k=275k

50k+ wages, default stadium:

Minimum: 50k
Maximum: 75k+200k=275k

0k wages, top stadium:

Minimum: 50k
Maximum: 200k+200k=400k

50k+ wages, top stadium:

Minimum: 50k
Maximum: 200k+200k=400k

Premier Cup - 933k down to 0k (winner gets 1/6 Premier League winner)
Non Premiership Cup - 1.29m down to 0k (winner gets 1/3 Championship winner)

Additional Notes On New System

- starting squad wage cap for a new club would be reduced to 50k (but the budget remains at 500k).
- all stadium costs would be reduced by 1/3 in-line with the reduced income produced.
- an additional fans expectation aspect would be brought into stadium income calculation; essentially different fan types would react differently to a rise or fall in club reputation. For example a fall in reputation would see a higher than usual drop off in income from corporate/glory-hunter fans for the following season.

Possible Variations Of New System

- a compromise might be to keep general income, and have it split 50/50 with prize money. So prize money would account for 0-100k, general income 25-100k, with stadium 25-200k.
- should the prize money rise more steeply as it nears the top and less steeply near the bottom? This might introduce an even greater risk/reward element (e.g. you might spend your increased winnings for winning the Prem on wages, but then when you finish 4th next season you get hit harder) but the danger is it could lead to clubs breaking away at the top?

What are peoples' thoughts on these suggestions? Do you think income should depend more immediately on performance like this, and would the game be better for it?

Finally, apologies for the number overload, and on behalf of the development team I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year :)

Update 6th January

Thanks to all who have taken time to respond.

Mixed reaction to this one, some people thinking it's a good thing to reward performance more directly, and others concerned that it would lead to further separation of rich teams and poor teams. Worth pointing out though that the overall range of income under this is not significantly different to the overall range currently in live GWs, just that this suggestion more immediately links income with performance.

One pertinent point was the 'zero prize money for finishing bottom of the lowest division' aspect of the suggestion, several people commented that this seemed harsh, even though when compared to the existing system (i.e. in live GWs) the base overall combined income a team might expect hadn't changed significantly. However, it would seem sensible to modify the proposal so that stadium income started at 25k and minimum prize money started at 25k, to avoid the perception that a team could earn nothing for their season's performance.

The more negative comments were less aimed at the proposal itself than the fact that they felt there are other more important areas of the economy that should be addressed, a point which I cannot argue with, and this led to an interesting debate about wage demands and wage auctions with some good suggestions put forward.

Finally, we managed to have one person sneak in a match engine rant in the middle of the thread. Good work!

Introduction

Something we've debated a lot in the beta forum in recent weeks and months is the possible need to ensure that the successful clubs at the top of the Gameworld do not have the luxury not only of their success, but also of being able to bring in high profits, thus cementing their success further and making it increasingly hard for clubs to break into this 'inner circle'.

Firstly it would be sensible of me to clarify the kind of progression system/economy that we actually want in FML, as a number of people have asked for this.

- teams should not all be the same! A thriving Gameworld will have clubs at all financial and reputation levels. If every club is the same, then everyone competes for the same players, there is little reason to trade between clubs, and the game becomes boring. A gap between the rich and the poor is only a bad thing if a club cannot close the gap in a reasonable time frame (see below). The satisfaction of a giant-killing can't happen if there are no giants.

- crucially though, it should be possible for someone arriving at any stage of a Gameworld's existence to, given sufficient time, become one of the best teams in the Gameworld. A reasonable timeframe might be for a Gameworld that is 10 seasons old or greater, it could, if you were a good manager, take 10 seasons to work your way up from the bottom (the day you first sign-in) to the top (winning the UFFA CL three times in a row to gain the maximum rep of 20). For a Gameworld that is 5 seasons old, I think it would be reasonable to be able catch up in 5 seasons.

- perhaps more importantly than the above, however, a club should be able to see an immediate opportunity to progress up to the next level as a new club, and the potential for progression should be ever-present. Of course, that doesn't mean they will progress, because obviously not everybody can, but it should be within reach, and never appear impossible through some long-term effect of the economy. Most important of all, it should be fun trying to reach the next level!

- to achieve the above, we need a fluid economy where teams can rise and fall, and interchange with each other at all levels in the Gameworld. That doesn't mean that managers shouldn't be able to stay at their level, just that a drop in performance should have a bigger effect than it does currently in the game. To stay at the top of the Gameworld should require a near faultless performance from the manager and shouldn't be overly reliant on some prior investment/decision that means they are no longer properly tested. i.e. investment in something like your stadium should buy you the chance to afford to pay the top players, but not hand you no-strings-attached financial security.

So, how do we achieve that?

The most obvious thing to aim for is profit margins that are reduced dramatically for teams at the top of the Gameworld.

Essentially, if it cost so much to maintain your success to the extent that you cannot make a profit, then you start to live life on the edge. Your performance at that level starts to require you to continue to perform at that level in order to continue to be able to pay the bills, and if the mechanics are weighted correctly (and this is why I have proposed a greater emphasis on your performance during a single season for your income) then a slip-up will be more costly and potentially open the door to another club taking your place.

Some suggestions made in both the beta forums and in the prize money discussion thread identify the situation where locked players (generally the best ones in the Gameworld) are prevented from receiving a 'market wage' and so you end up with a situation where you have teams sitting pretty, with talented squads on low wages making substantial profits, whereas if those players had the opportunity to be properly 'valued' (in wage terms) on the open market they would ask for much more and thus reduce the profits being made.

Why don't we remove the locks?

This would appear at first-glance to be the purest solution; every player would then be regularly valued on the open market and command what the economy deems him to be worth and you would expect that as a result, profit margins would reduce.

However, there are a number of problems with this approach.

Firstly, the obvious one, locks were there for a very good reason! Namely, to enable a manager to keep a certain number of 'favourite' players indefinitely, players who he/she most likely has a bond with and who are important in keeping the manager interested in playing the game.

Secondly, it wouldn't necessarily help the smaller clubs - clubs with greater spending power might just end up poaching the best players from the smaller clubs. This could be mitigated against perhaps by a fairer method of compensation, but even then, losing a player through poaching is probably one of the least palatable aspects of the game. We've all had it happen, and it's not nice!

Thirdly, anything that encourages end-of-contract poaching is liable to have a negative effect on actual transfers taking place, as managers choose to wait for the end of contract auctions (although again, changing the way teams are compensated in end of contract auctions could help reduce this problem).

Owner has last matching rights

Another possible solution might be a system whereby the owner of a player gets a final option to match the highest bidder in an end of contract auction.

In this system, the owner wouldn't bid in the auction but would be told at the end of it what the highest bid was, and have a period of time in which to decide whether to match the offer.

The idea would be that the player still ends up commanding a market wage but the owner still retains control over keeping his favourite players, and this system would replace the concept of locks (that is, every player would go through this system instead).

There are problems with this approach too though.

Firstly, would it lead to people making spiteful bids for players they have no intention of signing simply because they know the owner wants to keep him desperately and thus force the price up?

Secondly, under the current transfer system teams could simply trade players with each other to get around it completely, so a solution would need to be thought for that.

Wage demands rise with the club

An idea put forward both in the beta forums and in the competition discussion thread would involve a system whereby the wage that a player will extend his contract is scaled-up according to the reputation of both himself and the club he plays for.

In this scenario, the concept of locks would be extended (or removed depending on how you look at it) such that all players can be locked, but at a wage cost.

The idea would be that this "wage multiplier" rises or falls gradually the longer the player is at a particular club.

It would be weighted such that particularly for the top players at top clubs there would come a point whereby it was sensible on the part of the owner to allow the player to go to a wage auction instead since the wage the player was asking for to extend his contract was either unaffordable to the owner or the owner simply doesn't think it is worth it.

myheadhurts suggested the following in the earlier discussion:

1 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for all clubs regardless of player
2 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for a level 1 club up to a maximum of 1.1 for a level 20 club
3 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for a level 1 club up to a maximum of 1.25 for a level 20 club
4 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for a level 1 club up to a maximum of 2.0 for a level 20 club
4.5 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for a level 1 club up to a maximum of 3.0 for a level 20 club
5 star player reputation - wage multiplier of 1.0 for a level 1 club up to a maximum of 5.0 for a level 20 club

A possible timeframe for a wage multiplier to fully align itself with a club might be 5 seasons.

The advantage with this approach is the lower the club the more security they have in keeping their players on their base demand.

The disadvantage with this approach goes back once again to the desire for a manager to be able to retain his favourite player; under this system it would be possible, at cost, but for the top players at top clubs, likely to be unrealistic.

Arguably, however, nobody should be able to monopolise the Gameworld's top players in this manner and the greater interests of the GW as a whole should be considered more important!

This system might sound complicated - but to you, as a manager, you would simply be told (as you already are) how much it will cost to auto extend a player's contract and choose whether you accept this or would rather risk a wage auction. The difference would be that the wage he asks for to extend his contract would rise or fall not only depending on the player's reputation (i.e. as he gets better, worse etc) but also as you, as a club, rise or fall in the Gameworld.

A more dynamic locking system

Celvin has suggested that the system could stay as it is but with a more flexible locking system available.

He writes:

"Imagine if a player's reputation(or AQ) could be broken into points, and you were only able to protect players for X amount of accumulated points.

For instance:

A Household Name: 5 points
World Famous: 4 points
High Profile: 3 points
Reckognized and below: 2 points each

Total points available: 15

For instance: You could protect: 1 Household Name 1 World Famous and 2 High Profile players at the same time."

Clearly this would help, but would you till end up with a number of players (albeit a smaller number of top players), bypassing the market, and thus just deferring the same issue of wage demands not keeping up with income?

There would also be the problem of top clubs transferring their 1 household name amongst each other at his low wage which would have to be addressed for this to work.

Conclusions

Those are just four possibilities, and all focus on the impact of wage demands on the economy.

Other possibilities include things like making stadium income more sensitive to performance via the introduction of fans expectations (high % of corporate fans? had a bad season? then let's drop your income more than we would normally for your drop in reputation). Although this alone would unlikely be enough to solve the problem, it would still be a nice addition.

Or a very crude mechanism to wipe out a club's profit each season via the payment of 'dividends' to imaginary shareholders.

I'm sure there are more.

Introduction

One of the things we're looking to improve on when we launch the new Gameworlds is the choice and structure of FAs.

Rather than have many small FAs, we think it's better to run with a smaller number of larger FAs with more tiers/levels, which provide a deeper sense of progression as you attempt to work your way up.

The other benefit of having larger FAs is that they should be more resilient to seasonal fluctuations in numbers and able retain a core number of tiers as people move FAs or join/leave the Gameworld.

So with all that in mind, I've divided things up into four FA types based on the type of managers I see playing the game, and their requirements.
 • Type 1 - Managers who want to play as many matches 'live' as possible
Ethos : "People in these FAs mainly want to play matches live and frown upon people leaving too many of their matches to their match plan. They play FML primarily for the head-to-head aspect, and feel that if they end up playing too many matches against an offline manager then they may aswell be playing FM instead."

Suggestion:

- call this the Live FA.
- initially 20 team leagues where teams play each other four times (so 76 games a season) but structure subject to the wishes of the members.
- if you exceed a moderate % of offline matches (% decided in conjunction with the members) then you get removed.
- uses the equal playing rights system so that logging on is encouraged, in order to secure playing rights for matches.
- operates in a single play time of 19:00 - 01:00. In future, if and when we open GWs in other timezones, this would be local time.
 • Type 2 - Managers who want to play in a familiar league structure
Ethos : "People in these FAs want to play a normal number of matches in a traditional league structure that they are familiar with in real-life, i.e. mainly a straight tiering system but if the FA becomes large then multiple divisions at certain levels."

Suggestion:

- call this the Traditional FA.
- typically 20 team leagues where teams play each other twice (so 38 games a season).
- if you exceed a high % of offline matches then you might be moved to the Casual FA.
- uses the equal playing rights system so that logging on is encouraged, in order to secure playing rights for matches.
- operates in a single 24 hour play-time with offline playing rights awarded at a variety of times to suit managers from all time-zones.
 • Type 3 - Managers who want to play lots of matches each season
Ethos : "People in these FAs have an unquenchable thirst to play lots of matches in a fast-paced environment. Whether they are against an online opponent or not is not the number one issue though they'd prefer live games if possible."

Suggestion:

- call this the Active FA.
- typically 16 team leagues where teams play each other twice, but running 3 times a season (so 90 games a season).
- if you exceed a high % of offline matches then you might be moved to the Casual FA.
- *uses the home playing rights system to ensure matches are always available to play when logging on.
- operates in a single 24 hour play-time with offline playing rights awarded at a variety of times to suit managers from all time-zones.

*see below for description; this might be contentious for this FA type.
 • Type 4 - Managers who want to play in a more relaxed manner
Ethos : "People in these FAs want the freedom to leave as few or as many matches to their match plan as they like with no pressure from anyone. They would be safe in the knowledge that when they log on they have some matches to play, but nobody is going to frown upon them if they disappear for days or even weeks."

Suggestion:

- call this the Casual FA (actually, I'd like a better name for it!).
- typically 20 team leagues where teams play each other twice (so 38 games a season).
- if you have either a low or high % of offline matches then it's nobody else's business.
- uses the home playing rights system to ensure matches are always available to play when logging on.
- operates in a single 24 hour play-time with offline playing rights awarded at a variety of times to suit managers from all time-zones.

 • Common features of all four types of FA
- FAs should operate with around 5-8 tiers.
- offline %s should never determine promotion or relegation of teams. Instead a team will be moved to a more suitable FA if they exceed the offline %, and if necessary a CPU club recruited to any divisions that subsequently fall below a lower limit of, say, 16 teams. Such teams should be phased-out again as soon as possible. The reason we should take this approach is that changing the rules for promotion/relegation after the season has finished makes a mockery of the season that just finished and means teams simply don't know what they need to achieve in any given season in order to progress.
- there are no prize money penalties, with the possible exception of the Live FA, if the members so decide. Otherwise, offline % only comes into it via the above.
- a club switching FAs must enter a division appropriate to its level. If necessary, divisions should be expanded to accommodate the new team.
- adding or removing tiers to an FA preferably must never happen as it can render the previous seasons' exploits irrelevant for many teams.
- where possible the top and bottom thirds of a division should be the 'hot spots' for promotion to ensure there is always something to play for, utilising play-offs where necessary.
- teams who restart must be placed in the lowest tier of an FA.
- match plans are allowed in all FA types, since in all FA types there are occasions where managers cannot log on even if they want to.
 • So, what about UFFA?
- The major UFFA competitions remain the pinnacle of Gameworld achievement, but with prize money awarded.
- The Gold Cup, Silver Cup, Cup Winners' Cup and Gameworld Cup remain the main competitions with the GC and SC only available to teams from top divisions, and CWC to all cup winners (probably including lower division cups otherwise that doesn't leave many!).
- teams who restart must forfeit their place in any UFFA competition for which they had qualified.
- match plans are allowed in UFFA.
- UFFA play times could alternate on a season-by-season basis, with 12pm-8pm, 8pm-4am and 4am-12pm as the options.
 • Offline playing rights system
With 1.4, we are introducing a new option for organisers whereby they can choose between two options for assigning offline playing rights:

- Equal Playing Rights - this is the way it currently works in Live; during the 5 day lead-up to a match deadline the team making the most challenges/being online the most earns the right to play the other team when the manager is offline.
- Home Playing Rights - this works as per the above but in addition, during the 5 day lead-up to a match deadline, the home team can actually play the match rightaway against his opponent, if his opponent is offline. This guarantees that managers can play at least 50% of their matches simply by logging-in, without having to worry about winning or losing rights.

The latter option is obviously not intended for something like the above-described Live FA, but would be aimed at FAs where the need to guarantee a manager some matches when they log in is of greater importance than encouraging live matches.

The signs are that it's working well in the CFA in beta GW Miller.

Actually, there is a third, but not currently used option:

- Away Playing Rights - as per the Home Playing Rights option, but it's the away team who gets the advanced rights to play the match in the 5 day lead-up period.

 • Gameworld Evolution
The above four FAs represent a suggested starting point for a Gameworld.

Over time as a Gameworld assumes its own identity, it should be possible for FAs to evolve too - so if there are enough people who want a new FA to operate in a certain way, and provided it wouldn't be to the detriment of the Gameworld as a whole, then we would support that.

 • Summary

So what does the community think of the suggestions above?

Can you think of anything glaringly missing or that you would like to see?
